For Tony's birthday, we joined our old friend Mark for his birthday, and went to Rome. I'd been to Rome many, many years ago, and looked forward to seeing what Tony would think of it. I think Mark was excited to see what Tony would think of this town which he holds so dear.
I hired a car to take us to the airport, and upon arrival, we went up to the Business Travelers Lounge - a perk for traveling with Mark.
Beaujolais Nouveau, was making its 2011 debut, and they were serving it in the lounge, so we all toasted a great trip, and got the birthday party weekend started off in style.
We arrived at the Waldorf Astoria Hilton Cavalieri, which has an amazing view of Rome. It is situated on top of a hill just outside of the Historic Center.
Our room was amazing, and there was a bottle of prosecco already chilled and ready for us. First class all the way!
The lobby is beautiful and full of some amazing art. They have a fantastic painting by the famous Venician painter, Tiepolo.
There is also a bronze by the Danish sculptor, Berthel Thorvaldsen. He has an entire museum in Copenhagen. Sadly, we didn't visit it when we were there earlier this year. Guess we'll just have to go back sometime.
As it was already getting late, we decided not to head into town, but rather to have dinner at the hotel. We settled into one of the large comfy sofas in the lobby, and had some Prosecco and rustic Italian sandwiches.
Then began what became a nightly tradition - Grappa tasting. Tony didn't like it the first night, but as the weekend wore on, he would develop a taste for it.
