Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The main reason for our trip to Edinburgh was to see the infamous Fringe Festival.  It is a collection of unique and different plays and performances.  It is world famous and was created in response to the Edinburgh Art Festival that happens at same time.  Some might say that it is now more famous than the original festival which spawned it.

The festival takes over many of the parks using outdoor and temporary indoor locations.  One of the funniest was the Channel 4, Moo Cow Theater, which resembles a cow flipped on its back.

Not surprisingly, the University of Edinburgh is very involved with the event, lending many of its buildings to it.

Our first show was SWAMP JUICE, which was a shadow puppet show.  It was fun, and along the lines of what I expected until they passed out 3D glasses, and the performer proceded to do shadow puppets in 3D.  I wouldn't have thought it possible, but it was absolutely amazing!

We also watched a show, that we basically found by using Fringe Roulette.  That is where you use the mobile phone app to tell you what is playing at that moment, and you go to the most outrageous sounding show.  That's how we ended up at the comedy troop performing Screw the World.  Pure silliness.

The other show we saw, Icaraus, was a sincere effort to combine story and acrobatics into a stage show.  It was unfortunately betrayed by really poor writing.  I think we were all dozing off on it.

After a long day of theater, we went out for Indian/Nepalese Food, which the UK is well know for.  I tried a Nepalese beer, but if you looked at the label, you would see that it was actually brewed in the UK.  Nonetheless, the dinner and beer was exceptional.

Here are a couple other wacky sounding shows that we didn't get to see but will give you an idea of the range of shows at the Fringe Festival.
